Between 15-16th of October, I joined the workshop "Planetary Communications" organised by Stockholm Resilience Centre at Lidingö island in the Stockholm Archipelago. It was the inaugural Lab in a series aimed at synthesising insights on communication efforts and strategies on global change. A gathering of various fields, including science communications, sustainability science, design, facilitation and marketing.
Johan Rockström from the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research kicked-off the event with a history and reflection on the impact of the Planetary Boundaries framework.
Mind whirling as it gets in these kinds of gatherings, it was insightful and inspiring. One key insight was how the notion of the future is ever present and profoundly shaping communication efforts. Often invisible and arguably unreflected on, people’s notions of what the future holds, is often the source of emotions that communicators seek to instill in their messages.
Shout out to Fredrik Moberg and Marcus Lundstedt for organising this thought-provoking event and creating such a collaborative environment. The challenges we face in communicating about global change are massive, so learning across fields and collaborating in innovative and radical project is crucial. Huge thanks and looking forward to the next steps on the project.
